Since 2008, the PBA has donated bikes to kids in need and this year we expanded our donation to 52 bikes and two different Collin County organizations! For many of our members, PBA participation is just about going out and riding their bikes. But, for a group of others who equally love to ride their bikes, it is also about giving back to the Collin County community that supports us and has patience with us as we are out riding. It is about giving the next generation of cyclists a chance to ride at a young age and giving them the resources needed to see where cycling takes them. Cycling builds confidence and teamwork and provides these kids with skills they will use their entire lives. Through these efforts we are actually investing for the future in our community.

We could not have done it without the generosity of money, spirit, resources, and time from many of our members and a few special sponsors.

Thanks go to the many elves who helped assemble the bikes obtained through negotiation by our President, Terry Brcka.

Thanks to our club sponsors whose contributions made the purchase of these bikes possible.

Thanks to Richardson Bike Mart in Frisco who donated helmets for each of the 52 riders.

Thanks to Steve Standifer for his generous personal contribution of $1,500 that helped us increase our donation count.

Thanks to Rick and Lori Maucieri for donating space at Rick’s warehouse for the bike builds because we have now officially outgrown Terry’s garage.

And thanks to the two organizations who allowed us to receive the gift of sharing by giving these bikes to their kids: The Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, and the Boys and Girls Club of Plano.

This post is to let you all know that I am stepping down as the PBA Blog Editor beginning in January. I am so fortunate to have been your newsletter (and now blog) editor for well over 5 years and have enjoyed every minute.

Our club is comprised of some wonderful people and some pretty amazing characters and I can’t think of a better group of individuals to call on as part of my extended family. The stories some of you have told and the adventures you have taken have been nothing short of amazing and, in some cases, miraculous.

Thanks to Chris Mathews for originally asking me to be the PBA newsletter editor and trusting that I knew how to be pesky enough to unearth some good stories and curious enough to dig a little deeper. Thanks also to all the contributors over the years who have shared their stories and photos.

I am, however, leaving you in the hands of a supremely talented lady who you already know and love. Lori Maucieri will be taking over as your Editor in January and I swear she is the only person who is equipped to take on this role. You have read her stories as the “Off The Back” contributor over the past year and, if you are lucky, you have been on rides with her. She brings a whole new perspective to the role and you will have a blast reading her stories and those of contributors who will support her. Did any of you ever watch “I Love Lucy” while you were growing up (or in reruns?) She is a real live Lucy and has the adventures to prove it.

Enjoy the work that she shares with you and most of all enjoy each other! You are all pretty special !

Roxanne

We all need to be watching out for each other and learning the key things to do in case there is an accident while you are venturing out on your bike.

This post is intended to be an ongoing dialogue of what we can do to help each other so please don’t assume this is all inclusive.

Add to this, often and freely:

1)   As a rider, make sure you take a form of ID that has your key contact information (Name, Address, Phone Number, Emergency Contact, any illnesses or allergies) as well as your Insurance Card

2)   Make sure your phone has an ICE listing  (In Case of Emergency contact)

3)   Tell your fellow riders where to find your ID and phone so they don’t have to search at a critical time.

4)   For those riders who are bystanders after the accident:  Make sure the fallen rider is not moved and stays still if at all possible, make sure other riders are stationed to flag cars around, and make sure your blinking lights are on since cars may not see you.

5)   Hopefully most times won’t call for an ambulance but, when there is a question (especially when it might involve head trauma), it is better safe than sorry so call 911.
