We are going to try something new and get a little bit of interaction going on with the BLOG. I am going to pose a question and want you to respond with your own personal take on it. That simple.
Here goes with the first question:
“What was your most embarrassing cycling moment?”
Crap…I have many! Hmmmm getting out of the saddle to sprint thru an intersection with a 4 way stop and having the peddle come off the crank! Yep, over the handlbars but kept the bike mostly in the air safe! Or, forgetting to say, “hey dude, hold my beer and watch this” when barely moving I decided to try and pull my back wheel up as I came off a curb just to lessen the impact – oh yeah…didn’t realize I was that strong and pulled the back wheel up over my head and then drove myself head first into the concrete….yep, Nick and Lauren were laughing…so was I.
I will have to say a source of continued embarassment or at least consternation is my family genetics and their mixing with biking. All I can say is that as I have continued to lose weight and build muscles it has migrated to one place… my butt. I did not know that I would get repeated fun poked at me by my wife for getting a J-Lo bubble butt. I cannot help it that this is happening as I continue to build muscles to power my frame around Collin county. I just need to invent some new “slimming” bike shorts for people with a similar issue and I will get rich!
Since y’all took the “Failure to Unclip” story…. I’ll have to relate my DB2 endo story. It was cold & I was doing ok until someone got a flat. Then I was just chilled. About a mile from the rest stop, someone yelled, “Slowing!” My brain was too busy whining to me about how cold my fingers & toes were to process that particular nugget & I ran right into the wheel in front of me. I went flying, did a tuck & roll & came up relatively unscathed, but for a bruised ego. (And all the bikes involved were ok too)
Let’s see; I’ve fallen over at a stop sign because I forgot to clip out, I was upset when I got home after buying two brand new mountain bikes years ago (first bikes in several decades…in my defense) and realizing that they didn’t include the kickstands. I promptly went back and made them put them on…the nerve of them not selling me a bikes without kickstands… But I’ll have to admit my most embarrassing moment happened not too long ago, measured in weeks actually, when I was leading a ride and got us lost…twice. I now own a phone smarter than me. It has a GPS and I can’t wait to test it.
Forget the embarrassement of unclipping the pedals and testing gravity (3 times)…I have to say that my most embarrassing story (as of now) has to be the day I went to the feed store and the lady asked about my livestock when I was buying Bag Balm. I thought she had a priceless look when I explained how I use it.
Though I have had my share of less than proud moments with pba, my most embarrassing bike story goes way back to my early teenage days. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and I was cruising through my neighborhood at a decent clip on my super cool new 10 speed Schwinn (or maybe it was the Sears Free Spirit). I was admiring the way the front wheel shimmered in the early morning sun light when BAM! I had run into the back of a parked car. That was almost as embarrassing as walking along after baseball practice and falling into an open manhole (luckily a very shallow one). Oh, and I asked for a kickstand for my first roadbike in 25 years when I bought it 2 years ago too. Oh, the shame….
In 2002, I decided I wanted to buy a road bike. I wasn’t sure if I would really like it so I didn’t want to make a huge investment. I carefully researched the different manufacturers and narrowed the choices down to a few. When the big day arrived to actually buy the bike, I went over to RBM as they had all of the bikes I was considering. After trying out several of them, I settled on the Lemond Buenos Aires. It was a flashy red (which at that time I thought was cool) and had an Ultegra drive train. Anyway, I started picking out all the little necessary extras that I wanted like bottle cages, computer, seat bags, tail light,etc. After I had bought all of those things, the sales rep says to me “Is there anything else you can think of that you need?”. I responded, how about a kickstand? The salesman looked at me with this strange look and said, “Sir, I won’t sell you this bike if you put a kickstand on it!”. End of story
When someone told me at the Memorial Day ride that I had my bike shorts on inside out…of course, I acted like I meant to be wearing them that way, just to get an extra days wear out of them. :)
Mine is probably similar to most. Coming up to an interesection with other riders and failing to clip out before I topple over. Love the blog site!
